Embracing the Chill: Beach Yoga, Laughter, and Bracing Swims in Woolacombe

embracing the chill

A Spring Sunday Morning:

Picture this: It’s the beginning of April, a chilly 7-degree Celsius morning, the sun just peeking over the horizon, and a group of dedicated souls gathering on Woolacombe Beach, Devon, UK for an invigorating 8:30am yoga session. And if that's not enough, we follow it up with a bracing cold water swim in 9-degree waters! Sounds like a recipe for frozen toes and a good story, right? Well, you're in luck because today I'll be sharing the joys, challenges, and camaraderie that make these experiences so unforgettable, from my own perspective. So, grab a hot cuppa, wrap yourself in a cosy blanket, and let's dive in!

Award winning Woolacombe Beach

Imagine beginning your day surrounded by the enchanting beauty of Woolacombe Beach, an award-winning oasis nestled along Devon's stunning coastline. As the backdrop for our beach yoga classes, you'll find yourself immersed in a haven of golden sands, clean waters, and the soothing sounds of rolling waves. Experience the magic of connecting with nature as you stretch, breathe, and grow amidst the awe-inspiring cliffs & sand dunes, vibrant wildflowers, and mesmerising seascape. The rejuvenating atmosphere creates the perfect setting to nourish your body, mind, and soul.

The Beach Yoga Experience

There's nothing quite like practicing yoga on a beach, with the sound of waves crashing in the background. The weather and sand can challenge you or aid your practice, so it is fun exploring!

As an instructor, I find it truly inspiring to see my clients embrace the unique experience of outdoor yoga. The cold air awakens our senses, making us feel more alive and connected to our bodies. Plus, it's an excellent opportunity to practice mindfulness and self-acceptance, as we embrace our asana practice with kindness and humility.

The Joys of a Bracing Swim

After our yoga class, you may opt to plunge into the icy waters, gasping and giggling as our bodies react to the sudden temperature change. The cold water is invigorating, and we emerge feeling renewed, refreshed, and ready to conquer the day. You really feel like you can take on anything after that! Emotional and mental training, helping with resilience throughout your day. It's incredible how a cold-water swim can boost our mood, energy, and overall well-being. And the best part? We get to share this experience with our amazing group, supporting and cheering each other on through the chills and thrills. It's a bonding experience like no other! 🌊❄️

Your teacher, guide, and optional swim buddy

I'm Sue, and at 55, I've been teaching yoga, Pilates, and mindful movement for over 30 years, I integrate my experience and practice having trained in many forms including, the Franklin Method, Garuda, meditation, sound therapy, and bodywork.  My goal is to create a unique experience tailored to my clients' individual needs. I believe that a warm, empathetic, and friendly approach is the key to making every class feel like a gathering of friends who come together to stretch, learn, and grow (even when it’s chilly outdoors)!  I am grateful to the National Trust who licence me to operate classes on their part of Woolacombe Beach.

Tips for Embracing the Chill

If you're considering joining us on our Woolacombe Beach adventures, here are a few tips to help you prepare:

  1. Layer up! Wear several layers of warm, moisture-wicking clothing to keep you cosy during your practice.

  2. If you choose to swim, invest in a quality change robe to simultaneously dry and warm up after the cold water swim.

  3. Bring water for class, sunglasses, hat, and a thermos of hot tea or coffee to warm up if you choose to swim.

  4. Have a dry towel or dry robe and a change of clothes ready for when you get out of the water.

  5. Most importantly, bring a sense of humour and an open heart. The cold might be challenging, but laughter and camaraderie make it all worth it.
